Impressive batting performance in the second innings helped Delhi-A escape defeat against Odisha-A in their four-day C K Nayudu Trophy (U-25) Elite Group-C match, which ended in a draw at Ravenshaw University ground here today.
Forced to follow on after conceding a massive first-innings lead of 310 runs, Delhi-A rode on a century by Rahul Yadav and a half-century each by Mohit Sharma and Yogesh Nagar to reach 349 for five in the second innings on the last day when both the captains agreed for the draw.
Yadav slammed an aggressive 109 and gave the visitors a solid start, compiling 191 runs in his opening-wicket partnership with Sharma, who hit 74. Odisha-A rekindled their victory hopes, taking four quick wickets and reducing the opposition to 195 for four.
But a 112-run stand for the fifth wicket between Nagar and Jagrit Anand enabled Delhi-A avoid defeat. Sheshdeep Patra and Lagnajit Samal bowled well in the second innings, picking up three and two wickets respectively.
Odisha-A, however, gained three points by virtue of taking first innings lead, while Delhi-A settled with one point. Odisha-A, who also drew their first two matches against Uttar Pradesh and Andhra, now have seven points in their kitty and would take on Karnataka in their fourth and last league match at Gandhi Stadium in Bolangir from November 29 to December 2.
Electing to bat, Odisha-A lost rode on a century each by in-form stumper Sujit Lenka and skipper Sandip Mulia to compile mammoth first innings total of 509. Bibhudutta Panda, Anurag Sarangi and Sanjib Barik compounded the agony of the opposition bowlers, notching up a half-century each. All-rounder Panda was unlucky to miss out on a century as he fell for 91, which included 13 hits to the fence and one over it.
Mulia got out just after completing his hundred (100 off 242 balls, 12x4), while Lenka departed after making 112 (209b, 13x4). Odisha lost two wickets for 49 runs before a 180-run partnership for the third wicket between Mulia and Lenka put them in a commanding position.
In reply, Delhi-A were bowled out for 199, losing wickets in regular intervals. Speedster Suryakanta Pradhan was most successful Odisha-A bowler with four wickets for 55, while Soumendra Das and Santanu Mishra picked up three and two wickets respectively.
